Curly Girls, if you didn't know perm rod styles are all the rave this spring aside from protective styling, the perfect perm rod set is definitely a great look for the spring! No matter the length just about everyone can achieve a successful perm rod using the similar products we will mention below. The first being perm rods which range from $1 all the way to $4 per pack. The second being a good setting foam and or lotion and the third being the optional gel for hold to help your perm rod set last longer than 2 days with this currently ever-changing weather. We both chose different methods to achieve this style but we used the same size perm rods they are the Jumbo you can purchase them from Sally's or your local beauty supply store.
Curly Girl Jade's Method To Achieve Her Perfect Perm Rod Style:
Hey guys, so I started off by deep conditioning my hair with the Shea Moisture's Super-fruit Complex 10-in-1 Renewal system (go check our deep conditioning post if you want to know more!) After that I washed my hair in luke warm water with the Organix argan oil & shea butter shampoo and then my Cream of Nature moisture extreme conditioner. Next, I detangled my hair using my wide tooth comb and my Aphogee Keratin & Green Tea Restructurizer spray to make sure my hair was smooth and easy to style. Plus, I love the Aphogee Restructurizer anyway because it strengthens and protects my hair. After that I separated my hair into four sections to apply my Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner ( this conditioner is a rise out conditioner but I like to use it as a leave in because it leaves my hair so soft and moisturized). My hair is super thick, so to make sure my hair dries in time I let my hair air dry a little before styling, to make sure my hair is damp and not soaked with water. Once I made sure it was damp, I separated it in to sections ( I did not part my hair in any special way) and to each section I applied Lotta Body Style Me texturizing setting lotion and a dime size amount of Eco Styler gel. The size of perm rods that I used were the 1 1/9 in long jumbo perm rods and it took about four packs to cover all of my hair. In the morning I just used a little bit of oil on my hands as I separated them. That's all I did! This was my first time trying out a perm rod set and I was very happy with the results. I styled my hair a little differently than my blogging counterpart. I chose to start my process by giving myself a hot oil treatment with grape seed oil (if you don't know what a hot oil treatment is we will be posting a How-To on Hot Oil Treatments as well) and then shampooing my hair with Shea Moisture's Raw Shea Butter Shampoo and rinsing my hair with lukewarm water, followed by a cold rinse to seal in the moisture. Then I began by sectioning my hair into random quadrants based on how I wanted to tackle my hair and I proceeded to moisturize the first quadrant with my Giovanni leave-in conditioner and detangle. This method works best for me and is not how you have to style your hair to achieve the style. After I applied my Giovanni Leave-In Conditioner and detangled I made my first part for my roller and I applied Lotta Bodies Wrap/Setting Foam to the entire length of the hair and I made sure my ends were coated heavily as to slick down on the roller. THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR THE FINISHED LOOK. I repeated that until I was finished making sure to spray those parts of my hair that were drying up. The Process took me about 2 1/2 hours not including my breaks. I allowed my hair to air dry over night but unfortunately it was not dry in the morning because of the time I started so I ended up blow drying my hair, luckily I planned for that and I spritzed my hair with my Paul Mitchell Heat Protectant the night before just incase that happened. Overall I rubbed grape seed oil in my finger and in my hair before I took out the perm rods to help with reducing frizz. The results are below. - Toni
After we reviewed our results and the products used we both decided if there was anything we would do differently it would be to try to find a product that has good hold to help our styles last longer due to the climate We live in during our spring it get's extremely humid/rainy and frizz is our arch nemesis at the current moment. During the winter it is cotton and the wind, so if you curly girls know of any good holding products for your hair that you like to use for your perm rods that don't create flakes please comment some below for us! We hope this helps you guys!
